Guatemala’s calm Pacific Coast has hands down some of the greatest bill fishing in the world. With a year round daily catch & release rate averaging 15-20 sailfish, your trip will become a lifetime remembering experience. Its waters hold some of the highest concentration of billfish year round, with 88 recorded releases in a single day and 145 releases in 3 days on conventional tackle, with a general average per boat of 20 each (catch & release only). Marlin adds to the excitement and generally appear in concentrations for a week or more several times a year.

Why not try fly fishing to add to the challenge? In addition to sail and marlin, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish and dorado are omnipresent. Couple this with endless black volcanic sand beaches, hot and humid weather perfect for sunbathing and water sports, and dense mangrove and natural reserves, and you are in for a truly magical fishing experience.

Guatemala is one of the largest breeding grounds for Pacific sailfish and boasts one of the highest concentrations of sailfish in the world. Along Guatemala’s Pacific coast, strong currents moving east from Mexico collide with currents moving west from El Salvador, creating an enormous natural occurring eddy, rich in bait and pelagic fish, making it a haven for sailfish, marlin, dorado, tuna, grouper, and many other species. Guatemala holds both the conventional and fly fishing records for most sailfish released in one day. Our fleet often releases 30 sailfish a day during peak season and has a year round daily average of 15-20 releases.

While our peak season is from October to June, sailfish are caught year round. Throughout the year anglers will enjoy calm waters and the benefit of a friendly fishing community, where captains are in constant communication to ensure everyone has an unforgettable fishing experience. Tropical Discovery Services and its local partner have successfully developed and refined the art of deep sea fishing in utmost comfort and luxury, in Guatemala’s untapped and magical southern Pacific waters.

The highest concentration of billfish in the world combined with our world class vessels and expert captains will undoubtedly provide you with the sportfishing vacation of a lifetime.

Fishing Guatemala Pacific Coast - Tropical DiscoverySeason and Species

Sailfish are abundant year round in Guatemala, with truly exceptional fishing from late-October through June. Year around, however July and August have historically seen the largest number of blue marlin. We do raise occasional black and stripe marlin, but the waters of Guatemala are predominately inhabited by blue marlin which average between 200 and 500 pounds.

Marlin add to the excitement and they generally show up in concentrations for a week or more several times a year. The Fall and Spring both have at least a 2 week period when blue marlin appear and tend to displace a portion of the sailfish. During these times, a run to the far offshore drop can normally put you on a 100 pound or better yellowfin tuna.

Throughout the year there are lots of good size tuna and dolphin fish in the 20 to 40 pound range to be caught, should that be your choice. Along the coastline, and within minutes of the docks, roosterfish are plentiful and of impressive size. Inshore fishing is also done the comfortable way by all the vessels in our own luxurious fleet. Scheduling a day of inshore fishing is an excellent way to round off your tour or fishing expedition. Please ask for our fishing reports should they be of interest to you.

Fishing Guatemala Pacific Coast - Tropical DiscoveryCommitment to Conservation

We here at Tropical Discovery Services are committed to conservation and catch and release practices. In most billfishing circles, it is a wonderful thing when a new fishing practice serves both an increased rate of effectiveness as well as the conservation of the quarry. The use of the circle hook to catch billfish is perhaps the “greatest thing” to happen to deep sea fishing in a long time.

We exclusively use circle hooks while billfishing and all billfish are catch and release. Through these efforts, the Guatemalan fishing community is working to ensure that Guatemala will remain a world-class billfishing destination.

The concomitant benefit from the use of this hook is the vastly improved condition of the fish caught. The conclusion is that the survival rate is greatly increased by hooking a fish in the corner of the mouth rather than in its stomach, gills or other internal areas including eye sockets or throat latches. The observations of all our crews conclusively support the view that the health of the average circle hook caught billfish is far better than the average one taken by a “J” hook. Bleeding is almost non-existent. Fish jump more often and more actively. Sounders, or fish swimming for the depths and sulking there, are far fewer.
