Archaeological Information Copan, Honduras

Stelaes, Ball Court, Acropolis, Tunnels, Temples

This magnificent park, located in the Copan Valley, has been a major source of information regarding the ancient Maya civilization. Copan has always been referred to as the most artistically advanced and elaborate of all the Maya cities. Copan was declared a heritage of humanity site in 1980 by UNESCO, and continuous study of the city by archaeologists for over a century make it the most studied city of the Maya.

Although the park itself is enclosed, the legacy of the Maya can be found throughout the valley. The principal attractions are the main park, "Las Sepulturas", "Los Sapos" , the stelae surrounding the valley and the two museums: the Museum or Archaeology, located in the town and the Museum of Maya Sculpture, located within the Visitors Center area of the Park.

  • At 8:00 am, meet and greet at your hotel in Copán and transfer to Quirigua with a bilingual guide. Quirigua is one of the smallest Mayan Cities, but one of the most notable due to its splendid series of monuments, probably founded in the Late Pre-Classic era and flourished until the 10th century, when it was abandoned for unknown reasons. The archaeological site of Quirigua contains the largest stela ever discovered in the Mayan world. It seems likely - because of its sudden burst of mastery - that the artisans, and perhaps the rulers of Quirigua came from Copán, Honduras, less than 100 kilometers south across the mountains. Copán had been erecting monuments for 250 years before Quirigua, and both cities apparently ceased within five years of each other. In 738 AD Quirigua's forces defeated the city of Copán and captured its ruler, XVIII Jog (18 rabbit), and had him beheaded. In the afternoon, transfer back to Copán. Please inquire for details and pricing * Includes: Transport, bilingual guide, entrance fee and box lunch.
  • We invite you to learn more about shade grown coffee, the traditional way of growing coffee beans, in an interactive and enchanting way. After a short trip from Copán Ruins, the Finca Santa Isabel offers this once in a lifetime "hands on" experience. Here you will learn all about shade grown coffee, beginning with the plant nursery where young coffee plants are grown and as we continue our hike up the mountains through the exuberant green plantation under magnificent trees, we will show you the harvesting and finally the processing of this bean. As shade coffee farms support over 150 species of birds you will also have the opportunity to watch birds and to take amazing jungle photos as you hike the different trails. • Starting at your hotel crossing the Copán River you will be taken to a small archaeological site called "Los Sapos", or the toads (a place that the Mayan women used to give birth to their children) and to the Hacienda San Lucas. From this restored 100-year-old farmhouse you will get lovely views of the town and the valley and start your ride on horseback (approx. 2 hrs) through the surrounding area accompanied by your guide. Please inquire for details and pricing * Includes: Private transport, Spanish speaking instructor, entrance fees and horseback riding. * Optional: English speaking guide available upon request

It offers a first class experience in an unspoiled part of the world. Here you learn about and interact with the intelligent, colorful birds of Central America. It is only about 2 kilometers from Copán. The birds here were rescued or donated by individuals concerned for their condition or unable to care for them in the long-term. The birds provide visitors a nearly complete reference of the parrots and toucans found in Honduras as well as the chance to interact directly with the birds. Please inquire for details and pricing * Includes: transport (motor taxi), expert bilingual guide in the bird park, and entrance fees.
